Sparkling Mint Matcha

This recipe creates a light, effervescent, and vibrant drink that highlights the pure flavors of mint and matcha.

Yields: 1 serving Prep Time: 5 minutes

Ingredients:

  • For the Matcha Base:

    • 1 tsp Nippon Matcha powder

    • 2 tbsp hot water (around 175°F / 80°C, not boiling)

  • For the Mint Refresher:

    • 4-6 fresh mint leaves, plus a sprig for garnish

    • 1-2 tsp honey or maple syrup (optional, for a touch of sweetness)

    • ½ cup (120ml) cold water

  • For Serving:

    • ½ cup (120ml) sparkling water (or club soda)

    • Ice cubes

    • 1 lime or lemon wedge, for garnish

Equipment:

  • Small bowl or mug

  • Matcha whisk (chasen) or a small regular whisk

  • Tall serving glass

  • Spoon or muddler

Instructions:

1. Prepare the Matcha Base:

  1. Sift the matcha powder into your small bowl or mug to prevent clumps.

  2. Add the hot water (not boiling, as boiling water can make matcha bitter).

  3. Whisk vigorously in a "W" or "M" motion with a matcha whisk until the matcha is fully dissolved and a fine foam appears. If you don't have a matcha whisk, use a small regular whisk. Set aside.

2. Muddle the Mint:

  1. Place the 4-6 fresh mint leaves and optional sweetener into your serving glass.

  2. Using the back of a spoon or a muddler, gently press the mint leaves to release their essential oils and flavor. Be careful not to tear them apart.

3. Assemble the Drink:

  1. Add a generous amount of ice cubes to the glass with the muddled mint.

  2. Pour in the ½ cup of cold water and stir gently to combine the mint and sweetener.

  3. Slowly pour your prepared matcha base over the ice.

  4. Top with the sparkling water to fill the glass. You will see a beautiful layered effect.

4. Garnish and Serve:

  1. Garnish with a fresh mint sprig and a wedge of lime or lemon.

  2. Enjoy immediately! Stir gently with a straw before drinking to mix the layers.

Chef's Notes & Refreshing Tips:

  • Matcha Quality: Always opt for high quality matcha for best results.

  • Muddling is Key: The gentle pressing of the mint releases its flavor without making it bitter. Don't crush it too aggressively!

  • Sweetener Control: This drink is delicious with just a hint of sweetness. Start with a small amount or omit it entirely to let the pure flavors shine through.

  • Make It a Mocktail: For a beautiful, layered presentation, you can pour the matcha base first, then add ice, then top with the mint-infused water and sparkling water.

  • Flavor Variations: Try muddling in a few fresh raspberries or a couple of slices of cucumber for a different, refreshing twist!

  • Pro-Tip for Smooth Matcha: Making the matcha paste first is the best way to guarantee a lump-free drink.
