Yields: 1 serving Prep Time: 5 minutes
Ingredients:
-
For the Matcha Base:
-
1 tsp Nippon Matcha powder
-
2 tbsp hot water (around 175°F / 80°C, not boiling)
-
-
For the Mint Refresher:
-
4-6 fresh mint leaves, plus a sprig for garnish
-
1-2 tsp honey or maple syrup (optional, for a touch of sweetness)
-
½ cup (120ml) cold water
-
-
For Serving:
-
½ cup (120ml) sparkling water (or club soda)
-
Ice cubes
-
1 lime or lemon wedge, for garnish
-
Equipment:
-
Small bowl or mug
-
Matcha whisk (chasen) or a small regular whisk
-
Tall serving glass
-
Spoon or muddler
Instructions:
1. Prepare the Matcha Base:
-
Sift the matcha powder into your small bowl or mug to prevent clumps.
-
Add the hot water (not boiling, as boiling water can make matcha bitter).
-
Whisk vigorously in a "W" or "M" motion with a matcha whisk until the matcha is fully dissolved and a fine foam appears. If you don't have a matcha whisk, use a small regular whisk. Set aside.
2. Muddle the Mint:
-
Place the 4-6 fresh mint leaves and optional sweetener into your serving glass.
-
Using the back of a spoon or a muddler, gently press the mint leaves to release their essential oils and flavor. Be careful not to tear them apart.
3. Assemble the Drink:
-
Add a generous amount of ice cubes to the glass with the muddled mint.
-
Pour in the ½ cup of cold water and stir gently to combine the mint and sweetener.
-
Slowly pour your prepared matcha base over the ice.
-
Top with the sparkling water to fill the glass. You will see a beautiful layered effect.
4. Garnish and Serve:
-
Garnish with a fresh mint sprig and a wedge of lime or lemon.
-
Enjoy immediately! Stir gently with a straw before drinking to mix the layers.
Chef's Notes & Refreshing Tips:
-
Matcha Quality: Always opt for high quality matcha for best results.
-
Muddling is Key: The gentle pressing of the mint releases its flavor without making it bitter. Don't crush it too aggressively!
-
Sweetener Control: This drink is delicious with just a hint of sweetness. Start with a small amount or omit it entirely to let the pure flavors shine through.
-
Make It a Mocktail: For a beautiful, layered presentation, you can pour the matcha base first, then add ice, then top with the mint-infused water and sparkling water.
-
Flavor Variations: Try muddling in a few fresh raspberries or a couple of slices of cucumber for a different, refreshing twist!
-
Pro-Tip for Smooth Matcha: Making the matcha paste first is the best way to guarantee a lump-free drink.
